"I own and live in a unit in a building of six units built in the 1950s. When I moved in two years ago, I knew the corroding galvanized lines were a problem - I just didn't know how much of a problem. We had four plumbers out to quote on the job. One never called back. Another quoted $72,000, then changed to $24,000, but did not include closing the holes they would have to cut into the wall. Another wouldn't give an estimate but offered to do the work piecemeal, with the first piece costing $5,000 to $10,000, and ending who knows where.
